Where to Find a Deli Sandwich in Saigon: District 3 and Thảo Điền

The short answer: A deli sandwich is a stack of meat, cheese and sauce built to order on bread that can hold it. We make ours at SANDWICH by Dulce, 382/15 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai in Bàn Cờ Ward, District 3, open daily 9 AM to 8 PM. We also serve sandwiches at our Thảo Điền shop, 16 Đường số 54.

What is an American deli sandwich?

Layers. Cold cuts or roast beef, a slice or two of cheese, a sauce with some bite, and vegetables, stacked on bread with enough crust to carry the weight. Some go out cold. Some go on a press until the cheese melts.

That is the style our team in Bàn Cờ builds, on two breads we bake in house: tiger bread and focaccia. The Italian (mortadella, salami, coppa, provolone and oregano vinaigrette) is built cold on tiger bread and is not pressed. The Ham Jammer (ham, cheddar and red onion chutney) goes on focaccia and gets pressed hot.

Which sandwich for which moment?

Breakfast. The Breakfast Sandwich is pressed focaccia, 2 eggs, cheddar, and ham, bacon or salami. It is served all day, from opening to close. The full rundown is in our breakfast sandwich guide.

A hot lunch. Ham Jammer is the item our menu card tags Hot press. Italian Chick is chicken pressed with mozzarella melted on it, finished with pistachio pesto, on tiger bread.

A cold, heavy lunch. The Italian and Horsey Beef (roast beef, cheddar, horseradish mayo) are both built cold on tiger bread.

Something meat-free. Two vegetarian options: Caprese (tomato, stracciatella, rocket and pistachio lemon pesto) and Deviled Egg (egg, mayo, mustard and chili crisp).

Can I build my own?

Yes. Pick tiger bread or focaccia as the base, then add protein, cheese and extras such as eggs, cheddar or smoked ham, each priced on our menu. Mayonnaise, yellow mustard, lettuce, red onion and tomato cost nothing extra.

Why tiger bread and focaccia?

Because the bread decides what the sandwich can be. Tiger bread holds a heavy stack of cold cuts, so The Italian, Italian Chick, Tokyo Chick, Horsey Beef and Smokin’ Club sit on it.
