Exploring District 3’s Best Food Spots: A Guide To Our Best Hidden Hẻm Eats in Saigon

Where to eat in District 3?

Looking for the best street food in Ho Chi Minh City, a hidden coffee spot, or a must-try bakery recommendation? You’ve come to the right place!

District 3—especially the Bàn Cờ area—is the beating heart of local food culture in Saigon. This is where you’ll find tiny family-run eateries, bustling coffee carts, and countless hẻm (alleyways) hiding some of the city’s most memorable flavours. From early-morning bowls of noodles and sizzling street snacks to specialty coffee and freshly baked treats, every corner seems to hold a new discovery.

If you’re searching for the best American-style bakery in District 3, you’ll find Dulce de Saigon tucked away inside alley 382 on Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai. But we’re far from the only reason to explore this neighbourhood.

This is our honest, unfiltered guide to the best food spots in District 3, featuring our personal recommendations, must-try street food, hidden gems, and favourite places to eat around Bàn Cờ.

Why District 3 is the Real Saigon

District 1 gets the skyscrapers, the luxury hotels, and the massive influx of tourists. But District 3—right next door—is where the actual city lives.

This neighborhood is defined by French-era shophouses, massive shade trees, and families who have run the exact same corner cart for forty years. It is the land of the hẻm. You can duck into an alley to avoid traffic, buy a cheap cà phê sữa đá, and emerge an hour later having made three new friends. It is central enough to be accessible, but quiet enough to feel like a secret.

If you visit District 3, you have to walk. The good stuff is never on the main road. It is always hidden behind a parked motorbike under a hand-painted sign.

District 3 Highlights: Things to See & Landmarks

  • Tân Định Church – One of Ho Chi Minh City’s most iconic landmarks, famous for its striking pastel-pink façade and French Gothic architecture dating back to 1876. Address: 289 Hai Bà Trưng Street, Ward 8, District 3
  • Turtle Lake (Hồ Con Rùa) – A beloved local gathering spot surrounded by cafés and street food vendors. Come in the evening to experience Saigon’s youthful, laid-back atmosphere. Address: Roundabout at Võ Văn Tần, Phạm Ngọc Thạch and Trần Cao Vân Streets, District 3
  • Southern Women’s Museum – A fascinating museum dedicated to the role of Vietnamese women throughout the country’s history, with exhibits covering traditional life, wartime stories, and cultural heritage. Address: 202 Võ Thị Sáu Street, Ward Võ Thị Sáu, District 3
  • Vĩnh Nghiêm Pagoda – The city’s largest Mahayana Buddhist pagoda, recognised by its distinctive seven-storey tower and serene atmosphere despite its central location. Address: 339 Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa Street, Ward Võ Thị Sáu, District 3
  • Kỳ Đồng Church (Church of the Redeemer) – A beautiful red-brick Catholic church with a peaceful courtyard, often overlooked by tourists but appreciated by locals for its striking architecture. Address: 38 Kỳ Đồng Street, Ward 9, District 3
  • Lê Văn Tám Park – A large, leafy green space perfect for a morning stroll, people-watching, or observing locals practising tai chi and exercising at dawn. Address: Điện Biên Phủ Street, Ward Đa Kao/District 3 border

  • French Colonial Villas of District 3 – Wander through streets such as Trần Quốc Thảo, Tú Xương, and Võ Văn Tần to admire some of the city’s finest preserved colonial-era villas, hidden behind giant tropical trees and old gates. Address: Various locations throughout District 3

The Local Baker’s Crawl

We bake here every single day, so we eat around this neighborhood every time we get a chance. If a friend was visiting Saigon for the first time or we get to recommend tourists, this is the exact route I would send them on:

  • KOCHA  (Matcha): Located right by us. They serve our matcha cheesecake, but you go there for their authentic Uji ceremonial matcha from Inucha (who happens to be our matcha supplier too). We send people their way constantly.
  • Kebab Saigon: A legendary German-style kebab spot at 9 Nguyễn Thượng Hiền. It is open until 9 PM, cheap, and fiercely authentic.
  • Bánh Mì Pate Cột Đèn: Just down the street at 35 Nguyễn Thượng Hiền. This is the real Hải Phòng pate cột đèn—not a clone. The owner is incredibly sweet and will feed you massive bánh mì que.
  • Quán Cơm Tấm Hùng: Located at 194/2 Võ Văn Tần. This is one of my favorite broken rice spots in the city. It is always packed, completely outdoors, and under 100k VND.
  • Hồ Thị Kỳ Flower Market: Walk toward the District 10 edge right as the sun goes down. Once the flower market slows, the night food market explodes. Cambodian, Thai, and Vietnamese street food collide in a chaotic, brilliant alleyway adventure.

The Anchor in the Alley

And right in the middle of all of this, you’ll find our bakery.

We are the American-style anchor down the hẻm at 382/15 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai. If you have been wandering the alleys and suddenly crave a heavy New York cookie, a slice of dense cheesecake, or a hot pressed Focaccia or tiger-bread sandwich, you walk through our doors.

We are open daily from 8 AM to 9 PM. We exist to be the sweet finish to your District 3 crawl. Come explore the neighborhood, eat something incredible on the street, and end your night with a slice of cake. We’ll be waiting.

That’s part of our 4.8★ average across over 650+ Reviews — earned right here in the alley.

— Garret, Co-founder

About the author: Garret Nelson is Dulce de Saigon’s co-founder, and no tourist to this neighbourhood — he’s lived in Vietnam for over a decade (ten years of it teaching) and bakes in District 3 every day. This is genuinely the crawl he’d send a friend on. More at our story.
